Both Alaska and Hawaii where already settled and were already under the control of an established government before becoming a part of the U.S. unlike the other 48 states. They are also the only two states that are physically isolated and separated from the rest of the states. They are also the only two states that have their own time zone separate from any of the other states.
Commercial fishing is important to the economies of both states.
