Much like its predecessor medium, television, the fuel that drives and supports the web is advertising revenue. In television this was relatively straightforward. All ads were video clips. On the web it's a little more complicated. This is because site often use multiple forms of advertising: banners, popups, e-mail (commonly called spam), short video clips, video presentations, affiliate marketing, etc. Adblocker software is specifically designed to look for patterns in code that signal the placement of an ad and prevent that code from being executed, theoretically (and often very effectively) allowing the viewer to focus solely on the desired content.

Practically all browsers offer extensions: left-click on the browser's icon and go to 'extensions'. There you can choose from several tools that will block unwanted pop-ups and ads. Click on the ones you like and the browser will from then on surpress pop-up an other advertisements. Keep in mind that very occasionaly you may afterwards encounter a site that will not run, saying 'you cannot view this because you have an adblocker running'. A small price to pay, and you can temporarily disable the extensions if you are really desperate to view that site. Should you want to block advertising in games: there are options for that too.
