Alligator Gars are the largest out of all Gars. They can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh up to 300 pounds. They have long narrow bodies, and a long bill. This bill is why they are called "Alligator" Gars as it looks a lot like the snout of an alligator. They are usually olive-green in coloration with a white to cream underside. They have very prominent scales.
Alligator Gars mainly have a diet of fish but they will take a snatch at an occasional small turtle, carrion, or water fowl. Alligator Gars live in the South Eastern parts North America and throughout Central America. In North America they are usually found as far North as the Mississippi River Basin and as far West as Texas and into parts of Oklahoma. They are also found throughout Mexico. They tend to live in slow moving rivers where there is lots of protection for their young. They are also found in lakes, bays, and bayous. Their have primitive ganoid triangular scales, almost as hard as flint. They are gill breathers, like most fish, but can gulp enough oxygen to live as much as two hours out of the water. Despite their crocodile-like looks, they are sluggish and harmless if left alone. They have been found in some places in Asia and Oceana, but are very rare outside of North America. Their flesh is edible, but the milt and roe of all gar is poisonous, and must not be eaten.
