Saw your question and since I am an RN, thought I would go ahead and answer. I am assuming the question is asking: What is an ANTIBIOTIC, so that is what I will answer. The following definition was obtained from WebMD because it is a clear, concise explanation of antibiotics:

Antibiotics are medicines that kill bacteria. Bacteria can cause infections such as strep throat, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and sinus infections (sinusitis).

There are many types of antibiotics. Each works a little differently and acts on different types of bacteria. Your doctor will decide which antibiotic will work best for your infection.

Hope that answers your question.

Are archaea bacteria resistant to penicillin?

Without fully explaining how the penicillin antibitic works: yes, archaea are resistant to penicillin. This is because they don't have peptidoglycan in their cell wall. Penicillin works by lowering the newly formed peptidoglycan in multiplying bacteria. It also does other things. The reason it works (this is natural penicillin G) only on Gr+ is because the can't get through the GR- cell wall. (I say this because both + and - HAVE peptidoglycan in their cell wall)

Why is determining colonial morphology useful to a microbiologist?

The first thing a microbiologist observed in a labotatory culture of microbes is there colony, and by just observing the morphology of colonies any microbe one can distinguish or identify the type of organism not exactly but up to some extent, as the morphology of bacterial and fungal colonies are very different and also the different species of bacteria show different colour and shape the colony can be rough or smooth or can be sticky. Also the time of growth can be observed and the type of nutrition tell a microbiologist much about the microbes.
