An astronomical observatory is a place where astronomical events are observed (where you look at stars, planets, the Moon, the Sun).
Usually in modern times this is a remote place where stray light from cities does not reach, at a high elevation so the interference from the atmosphere is minimal and equipped with instruments (telescopes and such) to assist observation.
Astrology is a pseudo-science, a superstition. You don't need scientific equipment to "research" astrology. In fact, there is hardly any research going on in astrology. Perhaps you confused astrology with astronomy.
Typically, an "observatory", but with the advent of low-cost portable telescopes, you can do this pretty much anywhere.

Yes, there are telescopes aboard many satellites that perform astronomical observations.
It doesn't have to be big telescopes, there does not even have to be a telescope. It is called an observatory because it is a place where astronomical observations are made. Long before the first telescope was made there were observatories.

Benjamin Banneker did most of his work in a small cabin on his family's farm in Maryland. It was in this cabin that he conducted his astronomical observations, constructed his clocks, and wrote his almanacs.
