They are sent the same way as radio and TV communication do. Through electromagnetic waves, with a high frequency band. The difference is that cell towers of transmission are necessary because the battery of a mobile has no enough power to send signals at a great distance. As a cell-phone user drives down the street, the signal is handed from tower to tower.
