The earliest settlers tried to get along with the Native Americans through trade. For example, this is where the legend of the First Thanksgiving comes from. The Pilgrims from England sailed to Plymouth, New Jersey (Names after the port in England), where they were saved by Squanto and his tribe of Native Americans. Then, they all shared one dinner; Thanksgiving.
However, the settlers in Jamestown, Virginia were not nearly as fortunate. They frequently had skirmishes with the nearby tribes and this enmity carried on all the way to the French-Indian War (Seven Years War), where the few Native American allies of the British fought the French and their allies. However, after the American Revolution, the Native Americans were distanced from the States.
In his second term, one of president Andrew Jackson's goals was to push the Native Americans all the way past the Mississippi River, which he accomplished through the Trail of Tears. This is where the curse of the Native Americans arose, where the president every 40 years would experience some catastrophe:
1840 - William Henry Harrison elected and dies 30 days later
1860 - Abraham Lincoln elected and assassinated 5 years later
1880 - James Arthur Garfield elected and assassinated 5 months later
1900 - William McKinley elected and assassinated 3 years later
1920 - Warren G. Harding elected and died 2 years later
1940 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt elected, country enters Great Depression and then dies 12 years later
1960 - John Fitzgerald Kennedy elected and assassinated 2.5 years later
1980 - Ronald Reagan elected, assassination attempt, apologizes to the Native Americans, ending the curse
The US - Native American relations were bitter until Ronald Reagan apologized to them in his term.
