Food Nutrients Proteins Protein is the main structural component of the tissues and organs of the body. Proteins contain amino acids. However, the body cannot make all amino acids that it needs. Proteins are needed in the diet to supply the body with amino acids. Proteins are needed for growth and repair of body cells. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are nutrients that provide the body with energy. Sugar and starch are forms of carbohydrates. They are sources of energy needed for metabolism. Metabolism refers to all the chemicals processes that take place in the cells.Cereals, fruits and vegetables contain sugar, starch and cellulose. They also contain some vitamins and a little protein. They are known as unrefined carbohydrates. White flour and white sugar have no proteins or vitamins. They are only a source of energy. Fats Fats, like carbohydrates, provide the body with energy. However, some fats like those contained in meat and dairy products increase unwanted cholesterol in the body. They can cause coronary Heart disease. Other fats such as those found in avocado, olive oil, vegetable oil and fish do not increase the level of unwanted cholesterol. Have more of these in your diet. Fiber Fiber is the structural material (cellulose) in plants that is indigestible by humans. However, it is an essential part of the diet. High-fiber diets include fruits, raw vegetables, cereals and grains. They provide bulk without excess calories. Low-fiber diets are high in refined carbohydrates and fats. A diet which is low in fiber can cause constipation. It can also encourage obesity and heart disease. Water Water is needed by the body so that metabolism can be maintained. You take water into your body when you drink and when you eat food. Water is lost from the body in sweat, urine, and water vapor that you breathe out. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water each day is good for the body. This include juices from fruits and fluids from other foods. VitaminsVitamins are chemicals that are necessary for the normal functioning of the body. However, vitamins are required only in small amounts. These can be found in most of the foods we eat. A balanced diet that includes variety of foods is likely to contain adequate amounts of the vitamins needed by the body. However, a doctor may recommend vitamin supplements if a person really needs them.
