Actually, work, defined scientifically, means that you are using force to make something go in the direction of the force. If you are writing, or doing something that doesnt invovle movement, then it is not considered work; scientifically. Even if you are carrying something, this isn't defined as work because whatever you may be carrying is NOT moving in the direction of your force ( you are moving forward or backward, while the object is being held upward.). So work is done when pushing something, moving something, pulling something, or even Weightlifting.

To me, it is linked with the amount of mental effort to do a task that I have put off doing for some time that now has to be done in a hurry. Other people would say it has to do with effort: like doing physical labor outside on the hottest day of the year.
It works for some people. On some people, it irritates their skin. On the other hand, for some people, it works quite well.
