It is a category of tax. A tax imposed on the doing or manufacturing of something, as opposed to the selling or making an income on something.

A Federal or state tax imposed on the manufacture and distribution of certain non-essential consumer goods. Examples of excise taxes include environmental taxes, communications taxes, and fuel taxes.

1. An indirect tax charged on the sale of a particular good; types of sales tax initially paid by the wholesaler

2. A penalty tax applied to ineligible transactions in retirement accounts. This penalty is assessed by and paid to the IRS.
