In this process bond breaking always requires energy while bond making always release energy. The balance between these two processes result in two types of reactions exothermic and endothermic reaction. When the energy released by bond forming is greater than the energy consumed by bond breaking there is a net release of chemical energy. This type of reaction is called exothermic reaction+ it is a chemical reaction that releases energy in the form of light or heat.

Is a raccoon an endotherm or exotherm?

No, raccoons are warm blooded - endothermic.

What is an animal that relies on interaction with the environment to help it control body temperature known as?

An animal that relies on interaction with the environment to help control body temperature is known as an ectotherm. Ectotherms regulate their internal temperature by using external sources such as basking in the sun or seeking shade.

This is a reaction that gives out energy?

This type of reaction is known as an exothermic reaction. In this process, energy is released in the form of heat to the surroundings. Example of an exothermic reaction is the combustion of fuel.

Is neutralization endothermic or exothermic?

Acid (and base) neutralization are exotherm reactions

Is a rabbit an exotherm or endotherm?

A rabbit is a mammal, and as such it is an endotherm. He produces his own heat from the energy he gets from his food, and has no need of an extern source like the sun or a radiating lightbulb.

Is acid rain an exothermic or endothermic reaction?

The formation of acid rain involves an exothermic reaction. This occurs when pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides combine with water vapor in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid, releasing heat in the process.

Is a whale an endotherm or exotherm?

Yes. A dolphin is endothermic, able to maintain its own body temperature. It is a mammal, and mammals and birds are endothermic. The term 'endothermic' is the biological term for an animal that is warm-blooded.

Why Adding concentrated acid to water is exothermic?

Well, honey, when you add concentrated acid to water, it's like mixing fire and gasoline - things are gonna heat up real quick! The reaction between the acid and water releases energy in the form of heat, making it exothermic. So, remember, always add acid to water, unless you want a fiery science experiment on your hands!

Is fermentation an exothermic or endothermic process?

It is exothermic reaction. Why should bacteria go and spend energy to ferment any thing should a question, come to your mind. I view the situation in terms of the energy levels. In a typical glucose fermentation, you start with high energy glucose. The final product after, for example human digestion is considered, is low energy carbon dioxide and water. Some way down the slippery slope you have alcohol, i.e. energy has been lost = exotherm. To give an example, a typical beer fermentation can increase in temperature at the rate of 0.6'C per hour, but this depends on the fermentation temperature, the yeast and the amount of glucose present. Without cooling, the temperature of the fermentation increases such that the character of the final prodcut is adversely affected.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of exothermic and endothermic reactions?

The big advantage to being exothermic is that the animals save a huge amount of energy. In contrast, endothermal or warm blooded animals use roughly one third of the energy they ingest for heating. The big disadvantage in being exothermic is that moving, digesting and reproducing generaly use more energy and take longer to start up.

What is the treatment for Small amounts of bleach ingestion?

Bleach is nasty stuff, and really calls for an ER visit, especially as it's horrendously hard to treat in the field. Even a little will cause damage. Bleach, being an alkaline corrosive, will certainly do damage to all the mucous membranes it touches (this includes the esophagus, mouth, stomach, etc.) until it neutralizes. Acid neutralizes bleach -- BUT -- the combination of acid and bleach causes an exothermic reaction (they get hot), and so we can now add chemical burns to the situation -- or better, don't do this. SO... # The most important thing to do is maintain the airway, so the patient can breath. This may require a trach or a crichothyrotomy may be required (beyond most first aid capability). # Do NOT incude emesis (vomiting). It'll burn on the way back up the same way it burned on the way down. # Do NOT give liquids -- they can induce emesis. # Do NOT give an acid solution -- remember that exotherm! The only treatment I know of is: * IF you know it's solid bleach and.... * IF you know the patient injested it less than 30 minutes ago (a lot less hopefullly). * THEN -- you can give them some water or milk, in order to wash any flecks left in the esophagus down to the stomach, which is marginally bettter prepared to handle this. If you know someone who drank a small amount of bleach and made it, tell them they're lucky and not to do it again. P.S. -- in hospitals, a psyche consult is often called in for this, depending on the age of the victim.
