The easiest way to identify the purpose of a particular expansion card is to look at the ports on the end of the card that will be against the computer case. A network card for example will have a port shaped to accept a network cable. A sound card would have the jack for a microphone, headphones, and external speakers.
The ports used to connect external sound equipment are Line In, Mic and Line Out. These ports are usually located on the computer's sound card.
Peripheral ports such as COM, USB and serial ports, are input/output interfaces that allow devices to connect to a computer. Expansion slots are sockets on the motherboard where an expansion card is inserted.
If you already have a sound card, an additional sound card is by no means necessary. However different sound cards have different features, including differing audio ports, additional audio ports, higher sound quality or remote control among other things.
One way to add USB ports to a computer you need a USB expansion card that you add to the motherboard. The card usually has multiple USB ports built into them.

Some have a PCI sound card already installed on their PC's when bought but most all have some sort of integrated sound I/O ports on them.
The sockets on the outside of a computer that plug into an expansion card are called ports. Depending on the expansion card, there can be a variety of ports including USB, audio and network ports.
