One reason of significant medical and economic interest is that these plants might make chemicals that could either be used for the treatment of diseases or could lead to the development of synthetic chemicals that could be used for the treatment of diseases that would not otherwise be investigated and developed.
A reason of only purely scientific interest is that new species of plants that are unknown might be discovered.
