The word is operetta. If you know what an Opera is, you can think of an operetta as a similar work produced on the stage with both singing and spoken dialogue. (Opera is usually all singing.) It's a lighter form of entertainment. The form flourished in the late 19th century. Gilbert and Sullivan in London, Offenbach in Paris, and Johann Strauss in Vienna were leading composers. The form continued into the 20th century with Victor Herbert in New York. There were many other composers as well. The Broadway musical comedies, such as Show Boat by Jerome Kern and Oklahoma by Richard Rodgers, were not considered operettas but the form was not much different.
