Gravity and linear acceleration are sensed in the?

The saccule and utricle maintain stability of the head and body when it's motionless or in linear movement.

What is an organ located in the inner ear and is responsible for maintaining general equilibrium?

The vestibular system consists of chambers and canals in the inner ear: maculae (these tell whether you are upright or at an angle) cristae (these tell if you are stationary or rotating) saccule and utricle (otolith organs, these tell the angle of your head tilt, such as when accelerating or decelerating). semicircular canals (these tell the angle of rotation of your head). All of these are necessary for proprioception, that is, your body learns what its position is in space and thus can adjust to keep you from falling over.

How does the ear help us balance?

Your ears are amazing. The inner ear can detect your position of the body in relation to the original pull of gravity on the body and can tell you when it is different and when it comes back to normal. If you do a dive off of a diving board, you will unknowingly realize when you are upside right or inverted to any degree other than upright. The reason is there are patches of hair cells which are attached to thousands of tiny spheres of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and these are pulled downward by gravity and the brain gets notified of any changes such as a nod of the head or any other disorientation and your body reacts to this change therefore equilibrium can be maintained. There are three semicircular canals inside the inner ear at the top which are oriented to a different plane, giving your brain a X, Y and Z location to remember. When these planes are given some different information than your eyes can comprehend, such as being on a rocking boat or a roller coaster, you get disoriented and "sea-sickness" can occur. Motion sickness is just from two sensory organs sending alternate messages to the brain and you get that sick feeling in your stomach. Boxers who suffer from a quick blow to the head get a quick "something is wrong here" message and they get dizzy and disoriented thus, they take some time to regain their balance. This happens because more fluid from one of these semicircular canals go into the others and too much causes confusion and no equilibrium. See the related link for more information.

Why are semicircular canals sensitive to gravity?

Semicircular canals are sensitive to gravity because they are filled with fluid and contain hair cells that detect changes in the position of the head related to gravity. When the head moves, the fluid within the semicircular canals moves as well, stimulating the hair cells and sending signals to the brain about the body's orientation in space.

What is the medical term meaning stones in the ear?

An otolith, which translated literally means ear stone, is a part of the vestibular system in the ear.

Do goldfish have ears?

Yes they do but not like you and I. They have internal ear bones called an otolith that can feel vibrations. Avoid tapping on the glass since it will stress or even kill them.yes. of course they do. why not?

The hair cells of the utricle and saccule are clustered in?

ln the saccule and utricle, hair cells cluster within maculae, where their cilia contact the otolith (densely packed mineral crystals, called statoconia, in a matrix)

Do animals have a center of balance like humans?

The vestibular organ in the inner ear help an animal mantain its balance. It helps an animal keep its posture and monitors the movement and position of the head. The vestibular organ consists of two structures, the semicircular canals and the otolith organs. The semicircular canals tell an animal what direction it is moving in such as up, down, left or right. The canals also register changes in speed. The otolith organ are gravity receptors. They tell you if your head is tilted. This is much the same as a humans inner ear.

Which structures are found inside the central canal?

The central canal contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is surrounded by the gray matter of the spinal cord, which contains cell bodies, dendrites, and synapses of neurons. It also houses the central gray commissure, a band of gray matter that connects the two halves of the spinal cord.
