An old horse could be called a nag, a plug, or a jade. These are not complimentary terms.

A wild female horse is called the same as a domesticated female horse. If the female horse is less than 5 years of age it is called a FILLY, but if the female horse is over the age of 5 it is called a MARE.
A female horse over 5 years is called a mare. A female horse under 5 years is called a filly.

Nothing? A horse 1 years old is called a yearling. I don't think a 9yo horse is called anything. 9 years old is 27 in horse years...you didn't ask but I bet deep inside you were wondering. Sometimes a horse over 9 yrs old is called 'aged'
