The US Senate is the upper house of the bicameral US federal legislature. It consists of two publicly elected individuals from each of the US states. Senators must be at least 30 years of age, US citizens for at least nine years, and residents of the states that elect them. Each has one vote. A Senate term, the number of which per individual is not legally limited, is six years. In addition to authoring Federal Laws (in conjunction with the US House of Representatives), the US Senate is solely responsible for giving advice and approval on presidential appointments and treaties, trying individuals impeached by the House of Representatives and choosing a Vice President (from between the top two electoral vote recipients) when no candidate receives an absolute majority of electoral votes, along with a list of other rights and responsibilities which it shares with the US House of Representatives.
