Theistic evolution is a concept that asserts that the classic religious teachings about God are compatible with the modern scientific understanding about biological evolution. In short, theistic evolutionists believe that there is a God, that God is the creator of the material universe and all life within, and that biological evolution is simply a natural process within that creation. Evolution, according to this view, is simply a tool that God employed to develop the various life forms seen today. Theistic evolutionists may also believe that humans evolved, or that they were specially created by God, and that all other life was allowed to evolve.
The term 'Theistic Evolution' was used by Eugenie Scott to refer to the theological view that God creates through evolution. Theistic evolution is not a scientific theory, but a particular view about how the science of evolution could relate to religious belief and interpretation. For more information, please visit: http://christianity.answers.com/theology/the-story-of-creation

A disadvantage is that the theistic viewpoint can be wrong.

The materialist evolutionary view is described by Atheist Michael Ruse as an alternative religious view to the biblical creationist view of origins. Effectively this view seeks to explain all things in terms of materialistic answers only -God and the supernatural are ruled out as acceptable explanations. The Bible view of the history of the workld and mankind in particular is quite different both in terms of the origins issue and in terms of the history of the world since it began. One example is the flood which is denied by materialistic evolution. The Bible of course teaches that there was a worldwide flood which acccounts for much of what we see. The Bible teaches that we are all ''of one blood'' having descended from one human couple, Adam and Eve, in the relatively recent past. Some say this latter view is backed up by the discoveries of modern medicine and genetics which recognize that all humans are essentially very similar. In this case materialistic explanations of origins are at odds with both the Bible mainstream science.
