Any horse under one year old is called a foal. However, foals are commonly referred to as colts or fillies from the time of birth, (foaling).

After the age of twelve months the horse is called a yearling.

Between one and four years old a male horse is called a colt, while a female is called a filly.

After four, the male (if ungelded) is called a stallion; if castrated he's called a gelding.

The female after four is called a mare.
