Portraiture is the tradition and practice of creating a likeness in a pose and setting that conveys a sense of their overall personality and station more than any one photograph can convey. Traditionalists, differenciate a "head painting" from a portrait in that a portrait is less journalistic and more designed, as well as that a portrait includes the subject's hands.
An photograph is arguably the best way of having evidence for something, as it is a real image of something. An eyewitness may be true because it was someone that was there but that person might not remember things in full detail. A painting is very subjective because of the different styles artists paint, and also people are moving during the event so it is very hard to get a still picture to paint.

Many words in the English language come to us from Latin or Ancient Greek. "Photo" is derived from Greek - the Greek word "phos" means "light." The word "graph" also comes from a Greek word meaning "to draw." A Photograph is therefore a drawing made with light. We often shortern the word "photograph" to "photo." The latin word for "light" is "lux."
