One example would be the construction of a simple rubber ball. If hollow, the ball is filled with air. When the ball is bounced, the rubber is deformed and the air is compressed. Due to the elasticity of the rubber AND the air, they both try to return to their original shapes. The ball bounces, ta da!
In its normal state rubber is a solid, but as with anything else, it will change its state with the application of heat.
