I believe that Gibraltar is the only territory to have remained a British possession since 1713. The Spanish garrison at Gibraltar was captured by the British in 1704 and ceded to Britain under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. However, whether it should be regarded as a country is debatable because it would simply be reabsorbed into the rest of Spain if the British were to withdraw. Spanish attempts to regain the region by force were unsuccessful and since 1783 have pressed for a peaceful and negotiated return of "The Rock". This has been rejected by every British government as Gibraltar's strategic value at the entrance to the Mediterranean continued to grow. In the 1960's a referendum of the population produced a majority in favour of remaining a British Territory. The reaction from Spain was to close the border which remained closed until 1985. More recently there have been Anglo-Spanish talks on a proposed joint sovereignty of the territory but this was subsequently rejected in another referendum by 98.5% of Gibraltar's population!
