Good Question! Well, Kjeld Kirk Christianson, inventor of LEGO, wanted to come up with a catchy name. So he came up with LEGO, which in Danish (Danish because LEGO is Danish) means

'play' or 'play well'. Nowadays, if you enter a LEGO shop, and buy a set or two, mostly, the cashier would say 'Play Well'!
