The current status of this penguin is endangered, with an estimated population of 4,000. It is considered one of the world's rarest penguin species. The main threats include habitat degradation and introduced predators A reserve protecting more than 10% of the mainland population was established at Long Point in the Catlins in November 2007 by the Department of Conservation and the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust. if an individual wanted to assist in conservation efforts, contacting the trust would be ideal.

Yellow-eyed penguin protection

New Zealand's yellow-eyed penguin is threatened by loss of it's coastal nesting habitat through land clearing for agriculture and development, predation of penguins and eggs by introduced predators such as rats, stoats, domestic dogs and cats, disturbance by people, and by entanglement in inshore fishing gear at sea. After a catastrophic reduction in numbers in the latter part of the 20th century, much effort has gone into protecting and extending nesting habitat, and reducing the impact of predators and fishing on the penguins. Organisations such as the Yellow-eyed penguin trust, with funding from international conservations such as Care for the Wild International in the UK, have achieved a great deal and penguin numbers have increased substantially. The penguins are the subject of a New Zealand government 25-year Threatened Species Recovery Plan which was put in place in 2000.
