Birds molt to replace their old plumage. Feathers wear out and break. They are also able to freshen up for mating season. People renew their skin all the time, but the structure of feathers means they have to drop out and regrow.

In summer, chickens would be very hot when they would keep al the feathers they have in the winter, so they loose some of the little feathers under the big ones. When it gets colder, they get all new feathers, to protect them from the cold again.

ALL birds molt. Most molt once a year but some will molt a second time during breeding season.
