It is actually bordatella, a contagious canine disease caused by the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica. But boardatella is not far off, as the disease is often passed on from dog to dog in boarding kennels and other places where several dogs might be kept in close quarters. It is often called kennel cough and can be considered to be a canine chest cold. Things like stress, heavy dust, poor ventilation, cold temperatures and cigarette smoke can contribute to suscessability to bordella. Most responsible kennels will require vaccination B4 accepting dogs overnight, vets certainly will. The main sympton is a hacking cough, it takes from 2 to 14 days for symptoms to appear, the disease usually lasts a week to ten days, though it can be contagious for up to a month after symptoms pass, it is rarely serious except in puppies or otherwise weakened dogs. It can also occur in cats, rabbits, pigs and guinea pigs. Rarely it is possible for people to acquire the human version, whooping cough.

The bordatella shot is the vaccination and is considered to be safe and effective.
