Use CRC Brakleen brake cleaner. Spray it on and the silicone starts lifting right away. On heavy areas spray on small piece of ScotchBrite and it will rub it right off.

THE FIRST THING TO DO IS FIGURE WHY IT WON'T CLOSE. IS THE HANDLE PUSHED IN UNDER THE DASH ALL THE WAY? IT COULD BE STICKING OUT. IF THAT IS O.K. CHECK THAT THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE LATCH. IF THIS IS O.K. THE LATCH ITSELF IS PROBABLY IN THE CLOSED POSITION OR IS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY, DUE TO NEEDING OIL. YOU CAN HAVE SOME ONE PULL THE HANDLE IN & OUT TO CLEAN IT FIRST W/ MAYBE WD40 OR BRAKLEEN. IF IT IS MOVING AT ALL YOU CAN SEE IT MOVING IF IT IS. IF STILLNO MOVING PARTS IT COULD BE IN THE LOCK POSITION, YOU NEED TO HAVE SOMEONE AGAIN PULL THE HANDLE, WHILEYOU W/ A SCREWDRIVER TRY TO MOVE THE LATCH. IN THE MIDDLE THERE IS LIKE A U SHAPE THAT IS WHERE THE HOOD PIN ENDS UP WHEN CLOSED. PUSH THAT UP OR DOWN TO GET IT TO MOVE. How do you install starter for a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville Is there some kind of trick to getting to the bolts Then after it is unbolted is there enough room to pull it out?
Unless there is a rear brace (probably not) there should be only two large bolts at the front of the starter. You will need a socket wrench and if you are a 12-year old girl you might need a man to help you turn the bolts as they can be somewhat tight. I believe the socket required will be eigher 15mm or 9/16 inch. There is probably a black plastic cover over the front of the starter. Use a 3/8 inch socket to remove the bolts. If the starter has already been replaced by someone who isn't a mechanic or who is a very bad mechanic, the bolts might be rusted in place. If so, strike them several times with a large hammer or good air hammer to loosen them up. Before you put the bolts back in, do the right thing in case the starter has to be removed again at some point in the future: If a wire wheel is available, clean the threads of the bolt with it. Otherwise, just use some brakleen. Coat the bolts thoroughly. I like to use anti-seize lubricant, but engine oil or a petroleum or moly based grease works also. Do NOT use saltwater as a lubricant.

Do not use brake fluid, sandpaper, aggressive polishing compound or anything of that sort. What has turned yellow is the top layer of the anti-scratch, anti-UV hard coating applied to the face of the lens during manufacture. If you use a physically or chemically aggressive means of cleaning the lens, you'll scrub off all the coating and then the base plastic will be left exposed; it will quickly degrade far worse than before. Avoid the overpriced headlamp "restoration" kits. The "protectants" or "coatings" they claim will renew the anti-UV protection are useless. Buy a spray can of brake cleaner -- get the CRC brand called "Brakleen" with the red label, not green. Also buy a small bottle of clearcoat-safe car polish. Apply the brake cleaner liberally to a soft clean cotton rag and use it to gently wipe the yellowed front surface of the headlamp. Turn the cloth frequently as it becomes dirty. This works because the oxidized coating is soluble in brake cleaner, but the good layer underneath is not and so will remain intact and undamaged. This is not the case with a more aggressive technique or solvent (the good coating will be dissolved by brake fluid, for example, or scratched right off with sandpaper). Once that's done, use the car polish in accordance with label instructions.

Are you mechanically inclined? have you ever done a brake job before? If you answer NO to both of these, then its best to go to a brake shop and have it done. Don't take chances with your safety by trying to save a few bucks. the work they do is also warranteed against failure. If you do it and mess up, its all on you. If you say Yes to both, Do go find yourself a Hayne's repair book for the GM lunima/transport/sillohuette minivans. Its a good book to use because all the sequences show pics. The front discs are EASY. the rears are not too bad. Just make sure you have the front rotors and rear drum turned when you do. I keep an extra set of both on hand, and rotate them when its time. that way I have the rotors and drum read to install at brake job time. Its a hassle when you have to remove both or all, take it to the shop, wait for an undetermined amount of time to have them turned. Do it all ahead of time to make it easier and faster. When you buy new one, they don't need turning, but Do clean the break surfaces with brakleen before use. Take your old ones and keep them from rusting by storing them in a dry place. then when you go to the parts store to get your brake pads, you can drop off the units to be turned. when you go home you'll have ALL the parts you need to complete the job.
