So yes the cabin crew of an airplane company travel in the plane during their scheduled shift.

FLight attendants will come through the cabin towards the end of the flight with a trash bag and ask that you hand them your garbage. After the cabin is empty, the flight crew will go through and double-check the cabin, usually able to score a free magazine or two as well.
