Carbon dioxide is needed by plants for photosynthesis and it is produced as a waste product in respiration. Excess carbon dioxide may dissolve in sea water to produce carbonates. However, at present some scientists are concerned that too much carbon dioxide gas is getting into the atmosphere as a result of burning fossil fuels and this may be causing global warming.
