Well, it is most likely because of caterpillars, (the leaves) or ants, bugs, and even snails on the flowers. If you would like a solution, I personally suggest that you purchase a flower sprayer or you have a daily check of your plants.

Over-watering may cause the edges to be brown. If there are spots on the leaves, either a chemical or insects may be causing the problem. Wash the plant's leaves (top and bottom) with a mild soap solution and rinse.

My best guess is that some of the sugar inside the vegetables caramelizes with the heat, turning the vegetables brown.

I look for brightly colored, "healthy" looking produce. I won't buy vegetables that are squishy or soft or have moldy or rotten spots. I also smell the vegetables, passing them over if they smell foul. On leafy vegetables, I pass over those that have wilted, brown leaves.
