Why was there transition from subsistence to commercial farming in India?
After independence, the farmers transformed subsistence
agriculture into commercial agriculture. They tripled the
production by adopting various measures. The fragmentation of land
was stopped through Chakbandi. Land-holding became large and fields
were plowed on a co-operative basis. The farmers now began to use
new techniques and scientific methods and improved the high
yielding varieties of seed. The fertility of the soil was
maintained and increased through the use of chemical fertilizers
and irrigation facilities, multiple cropping inter-cropping,
rotation of crops, etc. were practiced to ensure better crop yields
and to maintain the fertility of the soil.
