Charity is the act of giving a good or a service. The gift of charity will cause the person with the gift to feel that giving is all important. When they understand that someone has a deep need they can fill, they will drop what they are doing to have the opportunity to give to that person in need. (They are compelled to help). Those with the gift of charity do not feel comfortable having their name attached to their deeds because they feel God should receive all praise. A person of charity may set goods aside to be ready to give to a random stranger. They will also be found giving their time and energy to aid someone who may or may not ever know who helped them because the act of giving is important but receiving something in return is not. It is important to not confuse a person who is co-dependent in relationships with a person with the gift of charity. A co-dependent person gives to control.
A:The word charity in The Bible only occurs 28 times in the King James Bible and only in the New Testament. The Greek word is agapē and most times it is translated as love, which conveys the true meaning of the original much better than charity. There is another word in the Greek New Testament that is translated "love", it is phileō, and is not as strong as agapē. Phileō is closer in meaning to kindness, affection or liking and agapē is love that is much deeper than that, it is used to describe God's love that prompted Him to give "only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) Charity is an outdated English word that caries a completely different meaning in modern English than it did in 1611. So when you see charity in the Bible, you can just read "love".
