R12 is Dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl2F2), which means that it's base structure is of one carbon atom, two atoms of Clorine and two atoms of Fluorine combined. It is commonly referred to as Freon 12, or CFC 12, where the CFC stands for 'clorofluorocarbon'. It's nonflammable and low toxicity characteristics made it well suited for use in household refrigeration, beginning in the late 1920's, and later automotive air conditioning, until it was banned in July, 1992 due to findings that the clorine attacks the ozone layer.
