Chimney sweepers are mainly in charge of cleaning chimneys. They were most popular in the Industrial Revolution, and were treated poorly. Many chimney sweepers were children , resulting in many deaths. Children often died due to soot inhalation which caused respiratory problems, broken bones, and becoming stuck inside the chimneys. Children were often used because they could fit inside the chimneys to do a better job a cleaning, and their boss did not have to pay them much at all.

In Britain, when most houses had coal fires, the chimney would need to be swept free of clogging soot once or twice a year. Therefore, a person whose job/business was to sweep chimneys was a 'chimney Sweep'. If a chimney got too sooted up, smoke would often enter back into the room - "Time to get the chimney sweep in", would be the cry!
The British traditional chimney sweep would cover the fireplace with a cloth that had a sleeve. A circular brushhead would be screwed on to a rod and thrust up the chimney, rods added as required. It was important to keep a right-hand twist to the rods, or they might unscrew, leaving some rods and the brush too far up the chimney to easily reach. Such a disaster would result in the chimney sweep having to use a ladder and a cat-ladder to reach the roof top chimney pot. From here he would attempt to either use a housebrick tied on a thick string, or spare rods to push the brush downwards. An assistant would unscrew the rods as they reached the firegrate. If successful, the brush would be retrieved from the fire place! The above is from experience of, as a child in Liverpool, watching the chimney sweep in our terraced house - once having to clamber on to our roof! I don't expect he made that mistake ever again!
