It really depends. I've had mine since I was fourteen. Many people have different time spans in which cold urticaria occurs. Mine has been relatively mild but is getting worse with age. I carry an epinephrine injector (epi-pen) and take Xyzol for the reactions. It is not an easy condition to live with and is usually pretty embarrassing, to tell you the truth. It's not very fun having an extremely bad break out of hives all over your legs because you stood in the ocean. This incident happened a week before I was diagnosed so I had no medication and had to take benedryl for the reaction. Anyone that knows me never gives me benedryl because it gives me symptoms like I'm on drugs. Not a great thing when you are on a trip with your youth group.lol. I not only have cold urticaria but I also have CU Aka exercise urticaria. Where I live, It is often cold. And being in a military organization, I have to do a lot of running in the cold. Very embarrassing to be the only girl out of 30 guys and have a completely swollen and blotchy face and hands. Just take medication BEFORE doing anything even remotely cold. And unlike me, DON'T FORGET YOUR MEDICATION. Big mistake on my part.

Diet changes such as removing just 1 food ingredient can reduce urticaria attacks greatly. There is a site which sells a PDF on self treating urticaria, but they just updated the site to include lots of info & a blog. Might be worth a look as there is no cost. See Related links
