Looking in the Haynes Manual there are 2 code 118: one is for a 1.9L and it says "118, O,C ECT indicates -40 degree F/circuit grounded" and the other is a generic code for 1996 and later model Ford escorts and it reads "P0118 Engine coolant temperature circuit, high input" but it doesn't say how to fix it. Your best bet would be to take it to a mechanic. Hope this helps.
