The cold war was a period of tension between the two major world nations (U.S. and the Soviet Union) each wanting to dominate the world scene and each having enough nuclear weapons to utterly destroy the other. Since a war between them would result in mutually assured destruction they would not engage in actual combat, a "hot war," thus this Mexican standoff or "cold war" was the result. The cold war is defined to have begun in 1947. The term 'cold war' was coined by futuristic writer George Orwell.
