A computer virus is a malicious program that causes damage to your computer in the following ways:

- Can give a hacker control over your computer. These kinds of viruses are called backdoor viruses and rootkits.

- Can cause annoying popups and/or show ads. These are called Adware.

- Can infect your files with its own code. These are one of the most complex ones called worms.

- Can pretend to be an antivirus program that shows you fake threats, and tries to make you pay for the full version. Those are called rogues or fake antiviruses. If you get one, NEVER pay for it.

- Can encrypt your files and demand a fee for decrypting them. They are called ransomware. Once again, NEVER pay for them. In case you get one, make sure your important files are backed up so you can restore them.

- Can disguise itself as something else drop its payload immediately after you run it. They try to make the user run it by pretending to be something useful. The payload can be anything. They are called Trojan horses. The most simple type of virus.
