Cuprum. is the Latin name given to copper. Copper was first mined in Cyprus (Mediterranean Sea). Cyprus at the time was known as 'Alasia' , then 'Citium'. However, it has been known as Cyprus from Classical Greek times.

Copper ores were first reduced in Cyprus, to give the 'Copper Age', followed by the 'Bronze Age'. Hence the name 'Cuprum/Cyprium'.
