In Robert Frost's poem "The Most of It", the speaker uses the term "counter-love" to describe what is desired his subject:
He would cry out on life, that what it wants
Is not its own love back in copy speech,
But counter-love, original response.
I think this means he is searching for something as original as his own love. In music if both hands played the same notes on the piano for the entire piece we'd grow tired of listening, but when the hands play counter-point we hear a conversation between the two melodies which enriches the music. Frost's poem is about loneliness and desiring an original response. The boy is tired of life, of his own voice being seemingly imitated and mocked, of having his own love thrown back at him in "copy-speech." Counterpoint is the art of combining individual melodies, so counter-love must be the art of combining two individual loves.
