What is crashdump in unix?

A crashdump file is typically created when the operating system kernel has a "panic", or stops, due to an unforeseen situation. Since the OS can't understand what to do in that situation (whatever it may be), it just stops and puts a copy of everything that is in memory to a disk file for later analysis.
