Dewaxing is a petrochemical plant process where heavy waxes are removed from crude oils and reformed products prior to further treatment. Waxes are removed as they are not a desirable components in fuels or some hydrocarbon products. Recovered waxes are a byproduct of refineries with their own sales value.

What is the solvent used for base oil dewaxing?

The solvent commonly used for base oil dewaxing is typically a mixture of solvents such as isopropyl alcohol, n-pentane, or sometimes a combination of aromatic solvents. These solvents help lower the melting point of waxes, allowing them to be separated from the oil during the dewaxing process. The choice of solvent can vary depending on the specific characteristics of the oil being processed and the desired quality of the final product.

How do you make biodiesel from janitor fish?

Fish oil needs an acid pretreatment because of the high %FFA. Then it needs drying and sometimes dewaxing. After this a standard biodiesel reaction with caustic soda will convert the fish oil into biodiesel. More you can read at: http://www.greenerpro.com/BiodieselProcess.html

How do you separate paraffin wax from crude oil?

Waxes are separated from crude oils in a process called solvent dewaxing. A limited number of crude oils are suitable for processing in the lube oil refineries that run this process. These crude oils must have a high wax content in the original crude, resulting in a high pour point, making these types of crude oils difficult to extract and process in other refinery units. See the excellent link below entitled: "The Evolution of Base Oil Technology"

How do you remove wax from crude oil?

Wax is not removed from crude oil until it reaches the refinery. Several processes allow for the removal of wax from crude oil. In many cases the wax is not removed at all, but sent as residue to be broken down thermally in a coking unit or visbreaking unit. Other options include solvent dewaxing which involves adding a large amount of solvent in a ratio of 3:1 to 12:1 to remove the wax in a heavier product known as pitch. Solvent dewaxing is a dated process, and today wax removal is more commonly accomplished by using a catalyst at high temperature and pressure to isomerize the waxy "paraffin" molecules into more usable products (isoparaffins). Isoparaffins have a better viscosity index than paraffin and are typically used as lubricating oils for engines, turbines, etc.
