A Dramatic Monologue is a poem where a poetic persona (a fictional character, not the poet) speaks and tells us how they respond to a particular situation. Much of the art of the poetry is in allowing the reader to create a backstory for the speaker of the poem.
Some famous Dramatic Monologues include: Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister; The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock; Hugh Selwyn Mauberley; The Mercian Hymns; Death of the Hired Man; and Mending Sump.
