An X-ray is a type of medical scan. Several types of scanning tests can be used to make a diagnosis, depending on the situation. An X-ray is primarily used to determine if there is damage to bones such as a fracture or dislocated joint, locate a foreign object (i.e., bullet, a swallowed toy, etc), diagnose certain diseases (example-pneumonia) or to get a general idea of where to focus a more detailed scan of soft tissues. It is performed by placing the patient between a specialized type of film and a radiation source, which can be targeted at any given point of the body. It creates a picture that is then viewed by an X-ray technician, nurse, physician assistant or physician in order to help make his/her diagnosis. There are also CAT scans, MRI's, ultrasounds, and PET scans, all of which use different technology to be able to view inside the body in varying levels of detail.

It seems the question is asked because both ultrasound and x-rays are used to view into the body without actually cutting it open and looking at it.

Ultrasound is vibrations, just like sound is vibrations. If you look at a speaker, especially a big one for pronouncing bass, you can see the cone shaking. That's how it makes the sound -by vibrating. Ultrasound travels though the body (say a pregnant woman) just like sound would (you are able to hear things underwater, right?) and when it hits something, it bounces back, where it is picked up by a receiver. which then makes an image out of it.

X-rays are electromagnetic waves, like visible light. Other examples of electromagnetic waves are infrared (that's light that a remote control shoots at a TV to tell it what to do.) -snakes can see that, and ultraviolet (that's light from the sun tans skin. Its not in light bulbs, which is why people don't tan indoors.) -bees can see that. But people cant see infrared nor ultraviolet, even though they are just like visible light. The difference between visible light and all these other kinds of light are just like the difference between red and blue. They are both light but different colors, ultraviolet and infrared are colors we cannot see, and in fact, we can see only a tiny portion of the colors out there. X-rays are just like all these kinds of light and we cant see it but it is able to go through most of the body, bot not bone. Doctors use x-rays to see bones and things like that in the body because x-rays won't pass through bone, but they will go through muscle and skin. So when a doctor takes an x-ray, its just like making a silhouette, but with colors we cant see. Of course, the x-rays make the photo paper change color and that's how we are able to see the image but the principle is the same.

An X-ray use to diagnose dense tissues and bones while a CT scan is better to diagnose and capture bones, soft tissues and blood vessels all at the same time. For more information visit our official website Jantaxray.in

Mostly just usage.

An X-ray would be used to make a (semi) permanent record,

whereas a (x-ray) scanner would be used to take a transient peek.
