Retention time is the time of passing material(fluids) through the volume of the drum with determined flowrate :

Retention time=V/Q

which Q : flowrate

and V : Volume

but Detention time is the time that materials stay in drum

in batch systems Detention time equals with Retention time.

but in continious systems or semi batch systems denention time is bigger than Retention timecommonly.

Detention time= n Retention time

which n is the number of times which materials(fluids) pass through the the volume of drum.

Why does gravity slow down time?

think of it this way gravity is the time so the more gravity the more time. with out gravity there would be no time because of gravity stuff happens. with out time there would be no gravity. so you can think of it as the same think instead of diffrente thinks.
