This type of bullying is very subtle and is very common in girls, though boys sometimes use it as well. Examples are:

  • Emotionally isolating someone.
  • Shunning peers and excluding them from games, lunchroom chatter and not including them when handing out invitations to parties.
  • Spreading lies and rumors in order to ostracize someone.
  • Anything else that causes another person emotional pain is considered emotional bullying.

Psychological bullying is being threatened, stalked, standover tactics, gestures etc. See the weblink below.

Psychological bullying and/or sadism is often a part of the other categories of bullying. Here are some types of psychological bullying that are often overlooked:

Being extra nice to the victim before the attacks to bait them. If a target suffers low self-esteem, then artificially boosting it can make the target even more vulnerable. They will feel confusion and betrayal when the actual bullying starts by the same persons. That makes it even more cruel. The person starts to trust the bullies and then opens their heart to them, allowing the wounds to penetrate deeper.

Giving bad advice to the targets and complimenting them on following it. That group might not openly mess with the person for a while (just laugh at them behind their backs), but another group of bullies might in response to the victim being coached to make a fool out of themselves. Then in time, the initial bullies may start in on them again.

Coercion to commit acts that are outside the person's morals. The bullies tell them that they need to do such an act to gain loyalty, the right to be left alone, or to be like the in-crowd. The only thing is that when they give in and do what was asked, their actions are used as "evidence" to prove they are a bad person and deserving of bullying. It certainly takes a person lacking in empathy to use this category of behaviors to enhance the other categories of abuse.

Here are examples of emotional bullying:

1. Shunning - That is when nobody wants anything to do with you.

2. Fake friends - That is when they actually are super nice to you for a while. Then they either start shunning you, or they become vile and vicious for seemingly no reason. That of course was their plan all along. The turning phase can happen within 5 minutes, or it can happen after a few weeks. But the strategies for the different time spans vary. If they turn in five minutes, they may just abandon you while their friends bully you. If they turn after weeks, then it can be even more vicious, since you may have taken the bait, became vulnerable with them, and given them things to use against you. So the longer they fake at being your friends, the deeper the betrayal.

3. Constant attacks over a perceived flaw. That would be like if you are fat, and they are always making oinking sounds, chanting about your weight, telling fat jokes around you, etc.

What can you possibly do to prevent your schoolmates from bullying?

The simplest solution is to report the bullying to the school. The school owes a duty of care towards its students and must act to stop and prevent bullying. If they fail to take action to prevent or stop the bullying they are in breach of that duty and would be liable for damages. Remember that bullying is not only physical but can also be psychological. Physical injuries heal, psychological injuries do not. Do not allow them to continue, it is probable that you are not their only victim. Take a stand. Do not ignore it. All that will result from ignoring them is the level of the violence will escalate (violence can be psychological as well as physical) until they get a response. Report them and get them dealt with.
