This can be easily be done in 8 hours.
Time to replace the head gasket.
It is between the head assembly and the engine block. You have to take off the top part of the engine to get to it. it is really time consuming to replace.
Time to replace the head gasket.
You cannot and should not buy a used head gasket. If you have a blown head gasket you replace it with a new gasket. The gasket will cost very little. The labor to replace the gasket is where the cost is. Expect to pay from $500 to $1,000. This is a major repair that takes time.
The head or heads will have to be remove and inspected for cracks or warpage. You then replace the gasket and reinstall the head. Drain the oil and change the filter. Replace the thermostat and pour in fresh coolant. Unless you ran it hot or drove it for a long period of time in this condition you may be ok. If you just kept driving it then you will have damage to the rings and bearings an the engine may need an overhaul. Really depends on how long the engine was driven with a blown gasket.
A cracked radiator will NOT put water in the engine and make the oil milky. A bad head gasket WILL put water in the engine and make the oil look milky. That does not neccessarily mean you have a bad engine. Have someone fix or replace the radiator and replace the head gasket. It could be a good engine for a long time yet
Time for a new engine. Blown head gasket.
shop time is 30 hours
I would replace BOTH head gaskets unless there are other problems with the motor. GM V8s will go along time yet and it is not unusual with 160000 on the clock to blow a head gasket. If you have tons of extra cash laying around then replace the motor...1930fcoupe
Depends on the engine, but most of the time it is not required.
I would be more worried about the length of time that a head gasket has been left on your Jimmy. I take the gasket off my Jimmy right after I'm done using it. 16 years is a long time.
You gotta tear the engine down. Very time consuming and if your not a very skilled mechanic, i would not try it.
