LT1 is the type of engine. the 96 camaro ss has an LT1, and so does the 96 z28. the difference between the z28 and the ss is, the ss has the ram air hood, and other slp options such as cold air intake, hurst shifter, etc..
but to answer, the ss is faster than the z28, simply because of the small stuff. same engine though.
Not that much faster though. A catback and good CAI on a Z28 and you'll be slightly faster than the SS (IF your Z has 3.23 gears). The SS intake SUCKS actually but the hood looks awesome

I had a 95 Impala SS with the lt1 350 and a friend with a Camaro lt1 and as I understand it the main difference was the Caprice 9c1/ Impala SS LT1 had more torque than the Camaro and Corvette versions since it was a heavier car and thus had a slight less horse power. on a side note when I raced a corvette with a LT1 we were head to head, the corvette was stock and my only modification was a cold air intake. hope this helps you
