== == Flatulence (commonly referred to as ' passing gas') is normal to a certain extent, and certain foods as well as some medications can create it. It may be voluntary or involuntary. The gas produced thru chemical reactions and also some bacteria in our intestines are responsible for the stinky odour. Excessive flatulence may be a problem and can be treated. == == == == Also certain foods and some medications can create flatulence.
Flatulence is the production of a mixture of gases in the digestive tract of mammals or other animals that are byproducts of the digestion process. Such a mixture of gases is known as flatus, and is expelled from the rectum in a process colloquially referred to as "passing gas" or "farting". Flatus is brought to the rectum by the same process which causes feces to descend from the large intestine. The noises commonly associated with flatulence are caused by the vibration of the anal sphincter, and occasionally by the closed buttocks.
A significant portion of the expelled gas originates as swallowed air. Air is swallowed when food is chewed with the mouth partly open or hen the eater is talking as he eats.
Unlike ruminants (cows etc.) humans do not have population of cellulose digesting bacteria in their guts to create methane gas. As a consequence the gas emissions of humans are essentially methane free.

Flatulance is often associated with eating starchy foods. Many fat people tend to overeat and eat a lot of starchy foods which would cause them to produce more gas, resulting in more flatulance. Skinny, medium or obese, people can have flatulance and it can be caused by some foods (such as baked beans, Chili, spicy foods, eggs, beer, etc.) and WE ALL have flatulance to some degree. However, the above poster is correct in saying that obese people can have more flatulance than others because the tend not to exercise as much because of packing the extra weight.
