Here is a link posted in the related links section, to the basics of loading a revolver. Remember to always keep your face and fingers away form the muzzle and the the open end of the cylinder. http://www.ehow.com/how_2074718_load-blackpowder-revolver.html
If your .44 cal is a ball and caprevolver, you can use the .454, even if .451 is the perfect size. A ball and cap revolver press fits the ball into the charge hole in the cylinder. The lead balls are very soft lead, and will shave a small ring of lead from over-sized bullets. In effect, it shapes the bullet to the bore of the cylinder each time one is loaded. A bullet that is too SMALL is dangerous, and it can result in the flash from one charge firing jumping over to the next charge- a very BAD condition knows as "chain fire". Many good reloading manuals have a section dealing with muzzle loading firearms. By the way, search for a mnaual under "F LLI PIETTA".
